Is a semi-auto or pump action preferred. Also, what gauge would be best?
Responses from Anti-hunters will be laughed at.What shotgun action would you recommend for geese hunting?
Pump is the best i think. Although semi auto is faster I think pump is actually better. 12 gauge works great for everything. Have fun huntingWhat shotgun action would you recommend for geese hunting?
I like the 11-87 Remington.. but ya know... Ive done well with a side by side double and a few makes of pump guns.
Geese are tough...you can make a 20 guage work... but a 12 just throws more shot and has a little better reach. I have hunted with a few hardcore guys who like 10 gauges.. but not many are produced and shells are hard to find locally.
Since they outlawed lead shot over most waterways and for most waterfowl hunting in general... go with a longer chamber. The extra volume of the longer shell makes steel and lead alternative shot a bit more effective.
I prefer a pump-action, feeding and extraction are just more reliable.
If you can handle the 10ga., by all means do so, it will put the most shot in the air with more even patterns than the 12ga. 3 1/2';.
Just before lead shot was banned, there were some really excellent loads in 3'; 12ga. 1 7/8 oz. buffered, nickel-plated shot, and the 3 1/2'; 12ga. was not really necessary, though perhaps useful for turkey where density rather than consistency of pattern is more important. Lead #4 was best out of a 12ga, #2 from a 10ga. Now its all over the place what size steel to use, and what choke to choke it with. I am leaning towards single-B shot with an improved-modified choke. BB and larger just don't fill out the pattern at the longer ranges where their per-pellet retained energy would come into play.
A 12 gauge pump would do a great job i know from first hand experience
If you want to take the game every time go with a Perazzi Mirage 12 gauge. With 32 inch barrels.
pump action and 20 gauge is my preference, 12ga just has too much recoil.
Mossberg 10 guage pump.
