What is the best way to train a dog for hunting coon and other pest?

I am looking to get a few dogs for hunting but I want to know the best way to train them first. What is the best way to train a dog for hunting coon and other pest?
Do you want to compete? Do you want to ';go on hunts'; or just have a dog that keeps your yard free from coons?

It's difficult to say how to train it when we're not sure what you're looking for. A terrier might be a good choice for keeping your yard clear of pests. A coonhound (of course) would be the best choice for going on hunts and/or competing.

I've starred your question because there's a few people out there who are pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. What is the best way to train a dog for hunting coon and other pest?
My family always just used dogs with the instinct to hunt what you wanted to hunt. Obviously coon dogs for coon hunting. Beagles for rabbits, bird dogs for ducks or geese. Then they just took them hunting with an older dog. They train themselves by just doing it over and over. There is no magic formula. You tell them ';good'; when they do good. You correct them with a NO when they miss it. It is all instinctual behavior.
Ask the breeder you get your dog from.
Try to find someone to train it.
