What is the best round for a 300 mag hunting whitetail deer?

I am typically shooting from 200 to 400 yards, through a wide open bottom. I am using a Model 70 Winchester with 4-12X50 Nikon Buckmasters scope. (Just to give you and idea of my setup) Any input would be much appreciated. ThanksWhat is the best round for a 300 mag hunting whitetail deer?

165 grain, but I prefer the 30-06.*
Winchester Supreme 165gr.
wow, that is one hell of a long range deer gun.

Shoot what makes you happy, I think even a crappy bullet from a 300 winmag, if placed in the vitals, will take down a deer quickly.

Of course the best premium bullet will fail if you gutshot the animal.

Note, most 300 winmag ammo is tailored to larger game than whitetail deer (it's for elk) make sure you get light bullets and look for designs that expand easily, not penetrate deeply.

For example, winchester premium vital shock is good stuff, but the 180 grain with barnex triple shock x bullet is for elk, while the 165 grain bullet works great for whitetail

With your long range getup and 12 power scope, I'd look into the winchester premium vital shock 130 grain barnes TSX tipped, that is a very fast and flat shooting round, with plenty of whitetail busting potential. Even at 400 yards, it is only 15 inches low off of a 200 yard zero. Heck, maybe even zero for 300 yards and be 10 inches low at 400, any shot closer than 300 yards you still won't be more than 5 inches off.

of course, a 400 yard shot vs the vitals region of a deer, that is one hell of a long and difficult shot. Truth is, if you really expect to do that, you need to handload to combine the best premium bullet with a load that will group tight enough to allow it in your rifle.
Honestly your not gonna have any meat left if your gonna shoot it with a .300 and especially if its that close. a .300 is more for elk and moose and your bigger game
